Detox Diets


There are a number of detox diets available that claim to provide natural detoxification for your body. It is hard to know which ones really work. We have researched a number of detox diets and found those most likely to be beneficial to you, and will discuss them here. First, lets talk about the need for a detoxification diet.

In today's world, there is pollution everywhere. It's in the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe. We can't help but take in these toxins. Our livers filter the toxins out of our blood. However, with the amount of pollution today, our livers are working overtime. They can't keep up with the amount of toxins in our bodies. A detoxification diet helps remove these excess toxins.

There are many benefits to a detoxification diet. A detoxification diet can lead to increased energy and alertness. It can decrease mood swings and depression. It can cure digestive problems and skin problems. It strengthens the immune system.


You may be able to prevent the need for special detox diets by eating a healthy diet all the time. Eat whole grains, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables (organic is best), and drink lots of water. Avoid caffeine, sugar, and highly processed foods like fast foods and junk food.

Practicing good stress management also helps prevent the need for special detoxification diets. When we experience stress, our bodies produce certain chemicals such as adrenaline. These chemicals can build up in our systems and reach toxic levels. Meditation and yoga are good ways to manage stress. Not only do they help with stress, but the deep breathing techniques improve oxygen flow and blood circulation, which helps eliminate toxins from the system.


There are many natural detoxification diets from which to choose. We can give you an overview of some of them here, but you are advised to talk to your doctor before beginning a detoxification diet.

One common detoxification diet is the raw food diet. In this diet, at least 75% of the food consumed is raw, uncooked foods. The diet consists of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, yogurt, cheese, and so on. Organic foods are preferred. This diet can be sustained for a long time. It eliminates a lot of the toxins that we feed our body, thereby lightening the load on the liver.

Another popular detoxification diet is the lemonade diet. In this diet, only water with lemon juice added to it is consumed for several days. It is not meant to be used for weight loss, although weight loss will occur. Most of the weight will be regained after the diet is stopped. That's because most of the weight lost is water weight. The point of the diet is to flush toxins out of the system.

Another detoxification diet is a juice fast. This works similarly to the lemonade diet, except you drink fresh fruit and vegetable juices. It gives your liver a rest, since there are fewer toxins taken in that must be filtered out, and it helps flush toxins out of your system.

A diuretic diet can also be used to detox by flushing toxins out of the body. Diuretics are foods and herbs that cause the body to release fluid. There are also prescription medications that do this, which are sometimes prescribed for people with liver and kidney problems, or heart disease. Herbs and foods that have diuretic properties include celery seed, dandelion, juniper berries, asparagus, artichoke, and melon. While on a diuretic diet, you will find you have to urinate frequently. A diuretic diet should be followed for only a few days, because important minerals can also be flushed out of the body along with the toxins you want to lose.

See your doctor before beginning detox diets, especially if you have any health problems or are on any medications. Make sure to talk to your doctor before going on any sort of a fasting diet, like the lemonade diet or a juice fast.

Many natural detoxification programs recommend the use of herbal supplements. These supplements compliment the detox diets by helping to flush toxins from the system and supporting optimal liver functioning.
