Diabetic Vitamins

   

Diabetic vitamins are very important.  The right diabetic dietary supplements can help a person with diabetes maintain good health and avoid some of the common complications of the disease.  Of course, a healthy, balanced diet is always recommended, and it can go a long way toward treating diabetes.  Some people are able to manage diabetes with just diet, instead of requiring medication.  It can be hard to get enough of the nutrients we need from food alone, however, so diabetic dietary supplements can be very useful.

 

Important diabetic vitamins include:

  • Vitamin A.  This vitamin is good for your eyesight, and diabetics often have vision problems.
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin).  This vitamin helps the body utilize sugars effectively.
  • Vitamin B5.  This vitamin helps the body metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
  • Vitamin B6.  This vitamin helps the body produce insulin.
  • Vitamin B7 (biotin).  This vitamin helps the body metabolize carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.
  • Vitamin B9 (folic acid).  This vitamin helps prevent the vascular disease common with diabetes.
  • Vitamin B12.  This reduces the risk of nerve damage that can be caused by diabetes.
  • Antioxidants.  People with diabetes use up antioxidants more quickly than normal, so taking supplements is a good idea.  Vitamin C and vitamin E supplements are often recommended for this reason.
  • Alpha lipoic acid.  This helps improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Chromium.  This helps improve glucose tolerance.
  • Magnesium.  This mineral improves insulin products.  People with diabetes are often low in magnesium as well, so a supplement may be required.
  • Zinc.  This mineral can help lower blood glucose levels.

Diabetic Dietary Supplements

As explained above, good diabetic dietary supplements include a vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and vitamin E.  Any multivitamin will contain these vitamins, of course, but it may be useful to take additional supplements of them as well.

In addition to diabetic vitamins, there are a number of herbs that may be helpful for diabetes.  These include:

  • Asian ginseng.  This herb enhances insulin production and actually increases the number of insulin receptors.
  • Bitter melon.  This herb lowers blood sugar.
  • Cinnamon.  This improves the efficiency of insulin.
  • Garlic.  This lowers blood sugar.  It also lowers high blood pressure, which is common among many diabetics
  • Ginkgo biloba.  This herb is useful for treating and preventing diabetic neuropathy.

Multivitamins will not contain any herbal supplements, so you will need to take these separately.

Talk to your doctor about which diabetic vitamins, minerals, and herbs you should be taking.  You should know, though, that many doctors aren’t very well trained in nutrition, and particularly in the use of herbs.  If you’re interested in treating your diabetes this way, look for a doctor that is knowledgeable about these things and can advise you well.  Your pharmacist may also be able to give you some advice, as can a licensed dietician.

Take your diabetic vitamins daily.  Vitamins should usually be taken with food or milk, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
