Gluten is a protein found in some grains, including wheat, rye, and barley. Gluten itself is not high in fat or calories. However, some foods made with wheat, rye, and barely are. If you need to eat a gluten free diet, it is possible to develop a weight loss plan for a gluten free diet. If you don’t need to eat a gluten free diet due to a condition like gluten allergy or celiac disease, however, it is not necessary to switch to a gluten free diet in order to lose weight. Eating a healthful diet low in fat, calories, and carbohydrates will help you lose weight, whether it contains gluten or not.

Developing a Gluten Free Weight Loss Plan

If you need a gluten free weight loss plan, you might find it helpful to consult with a registered dietician. A registered dietician can help you determine your daily caloric needs and help you develop a meal plan that will meet your needs that is based on your food preferences and takes into account your need for a gluten free diet. Ask your doctor if you would like a referral to a dietician.

If you want to develop your own weight loss plan without input from a dietician, you can do that. You can find calculators online that will help you determine your daily caloric needs, but it really is advisable to consult a doctor or dietician about that because each individual is different and those online calorie calculators simply cannot take into account all the variables that affect your daily needs.

You can plan a diet that includes plenty of low fat, low calorie, low carb gluten free foods. You will need to take care to avoid gluten, of course, but it is not necessary to avoid grains altogether.

Foods on a Gluten Free Weight Loss Plan

Foods on a weight loss plan for a gluten free diet include fresh fruits and vegetables, beans, tofu, lean meats like poultry and fish, and low fat dairy products like skim milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese. Low fat cheeses can also be eaten, but read the labels carefully to make sure they are gluten free. Gluten free grains should be eaten in moderation, including brown rice, quinoa, and gluten free oats. Gluten free baked goods, made with flours like rice flour, soy flour, almond flour, and gram flour, can also be eaten in moderation. You should also drink plenty of low calorie gluten free liquids, like water, Crystal Light or other sugar free drinks, coffee, and tea.
