Lightweight Wheelchair Review

A lightweight wheelchair is a godsend for those whose wheelchairs must be carried up and down stairs or lifted in and out of car trunks.  Lightweight wheelchairs are available in a variety of styles and to meet a variety of needs, and are very popular these days.

Consider that the typical folding wheelchair weighs anywhere from 33 – 44 pounds.  That may not sound like much, but it can certainly be cumbersome when trying to lift the chair in and out of a car trunk.  The typical lighter weight wheelchair, on the other hand, weighs anywhere from 20 – 30 pounds.  There are even ultra light wheelchairs that weigh as little as 15 pounds.  They may be made with titanium rather than aluminum.

Rigid Frames Versus Folding Chairs

Lightweight wheelchairs are usually made with rigid frames rather than folding ones.

There are some benefits to folding chairs.  They are good choices for people who don’t use a wheelchair all the time, as they are easy to store and fit easily in the trunk of a car.  However, rigid frame wheelchairs often break down for storage in the trunk.  For instance, the rear wheels can be removed.  It’s just not as convenient as simply folding the chair up.

There are many benefits to rigid frame chairs, however.  They can be customized to meet the specific needs of the user.  For instance, they can have customized seatbacks, seat cushions, and foot pedals.  And being of a lighter weight is a benefit in many ways.

There are some folding chairs that are considered lightweight.  They usually weight about 30 pounds, which is not much less than the typical folding chair.  However, they offer the benefits of a folding chair along with some of the benefits of a lightweight chair.

Benefits of a Lightweight Wheelchair

There are many benefits to lightweight wheelchairs.  Simply being of a lighter weight is a benefit in itself.  It’s easier to carry up and down stairs and to lift into a car trunk.  It’s also easier to push a lightweight wheelchair.

Lightweight chairs are often smaller and more compact than folding chairs, making them easier to maneuver, especially in tight spaces.  Lightweight chairs are also more responsive than folding chairs.

A lightweight wheelchair is a good choice for those who live an active lifestyle or who participate in sports.  In fact, there are wheelchairs specifically designed for sports, and these are very lightweight.

Cost of a Lightweight Wheelchair

A lightweight wheelchair is more expensive than a standard folding chair.  A very lightweight chair, such as those weight only 15 or 20 pounds, are generally more expensive than lightweight chairs weighing a bit more.  Rigid frame chairs may cost more than folding lightweight chairs, particularly if they are customized in any way.  Sports wheelchairs may also be more expensive than regular chairs.

Ideally, cost would not be a factor in selecting a wheelchair.  However, the reality is that cost is a factor for many people.  If you have Medicare, Medicaid, or health insurance, they may cover part or all of the cost of a wheelchair if it is medically necessary.  Even if you have to pay for the chair yourself, you should try not to buy the least expensive but to choose the chair that will best meet your needs.  After all, most wheelchair users will be using the chair for a long time and it is an investment that can make your life easier and more enjoyable.
