Nutritional Supplements

There are so many nutritional supplements, herbal supplements, and dietary supplements out there, it can be confusing to choose among them.  We’ll give you some pointers on picking the right nutritional supplements for you.

What Are Dietary Supplements?

Supplements include things like vitamins, minerals, protein powders, and herbal supplements.  They are extra nutrients that we may choose to add to our daily diet.  Some are nutrients that occur naturally in our foods, like vitamins and minerals.  Others, like herbs, are not necessarily things we would ordinarily eat but things we may choose to include in our diet to improve our health.  Supplements can be purchased at health food stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, and online.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements are a bit different than other dietary supplements.  Some herbs are common in our diets, such as garlic, basil, rosemary, etc.  However, many commonly used herbal supplements are not typically found in our daily diet.  For instance, echinacea is commonly used to treat colds and infections, and ginkgo biloba is commonly used to improve memory and concentration.  However, we don’t normally eat those substances.  There is no way we’ll get them in a healthy, balanced diet.  We would need to make a conscious decision to supplement our diet with such herbs.

While herbs have been used for health reasons for hundreds of thousands of years and typically have far fewer side effects than medical drugs, they can in some cases interact with medications we might be taking or adversely affect health conditions we may have.  It is suggested that you do your research before taking herbal treatments.  You should discuss it with your health care provider, as well.

Choosing the Right Nutritional Supplements

To begin with, not everyone needs to take nutritional supplements, but many people do.  Ideally, we would get all the nutrients we need from our food, but that is not always possible.  Many of us eat too much processed food, pre-packaged food, and fast food.  Therefore, our diets may be lacking in the important nutrients that we need.  For those of us who don’t eat the ideal diet, dietary supplements may be necessary in order to make up for what we lack in our daily diet.

A good multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement is a good choice for most of us who need some sort of dietary supplements.  It will probably contain enough of the vitamins and minerals we need.  Some people may need additional supplementation.  For instance, it is often recommended that women take extra iron and calcium.  Smokers may need extra vitamin C.  Vegetarians may need extra vitamin B12.  If you’re not sure whether or not you need extra supplements, you should discuss the matter with your health care provider or a registered dietician.

Be wary of supplements that make grand promises.  While supplements can boost your health, most are not miracle cures.  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

To get the most from your supplements, look for those that contain natural, not synthetic ingredients.  You’ll absorb these nutrients better.  When comparing price, look at the quality of the ingredients and the amounts of each ingredients in the supplement.  Some supplement manufacturers keep costs low by using inferior ingredients and/or using only minimal amounts of key ingredients.
