We receive many questions about the best vitamins for women.  Women have specific nutritional needs, distinct from the nutritional needs of men.  While there are a number of good unisex vitamins out there, a vitamin supplement specifically formulated for women may be a better choice.

B-Complex Vitamins

B-complex vitamin supplements contain ample amounts of all the needed B vitamins, including folic acid, which is very important for women.  Many people believe that extra B vitamins help relieve stress and PMS, which can be serious problems for some women. 

Multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplements also contain all of the necessary B vitamins, though, along with the other major vitamins.  Most of the important B vitamins are also found in a variety of foods, so extra supplementation with a B-complex vitamin may not be necessary.  An exception is vitamin B12, which is only found in any significant amount in meats and dairy products.  For this reason, vegetarians may need to take a B12 supplement, particularly vegetarians who do not eat dairy.

Calcium

Women need more calcium than men, especially during and after menopause when osteoporosis is a concern.  Men can get osteoporosis too, but that is far less common.  Adult women age 19 – 50 need at least 1000 mg of calcium per day.  Women over 50 need more than that, at least 1200 mg per day.  Women with certain health conditions may need even more.  There are a couple different types of calcium, including calcium carbonate and calcium citrate.  Calcium citrate is the recommended form of calcium because it is much better absorbed.  Most multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplements contain calcium, but additional supplementation may be needed depending on your daily requirements and the amount of calcium in your regular supplement.

Folic Acid (Vitamin B 9)

Folic acid is an important vitamin for women.  In addition to other health benefits, it has been shown to help prevent certain kinds of birth defects during pregnancy.  Women need 400 mcg of folic acid per day.  Folic acid is found in any multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplement, and is also found in a variety of foods, so it is not difficult to get the recommended amount.  Folic acid is also found in B-complex vitamin supplements, but B-complex vitamins are not necessary for all women.

Iron

Women also need more iron than men, due to blood loss during menstruation.  While men need only 8 mg or iron per day, the recommended daily allowance for women is 18 mg.  Most multi-vitamin/multi-mineral supplements do not contain iron, since it interferes with the absorption of other nutrients, such as calcium.  For that reason, you may need to take an additional iron supplement.  Not all women need iron supplements, however; it is possible to get enough iron from your daily diet.  You can have a simple blood test done to see if you need to take extra iron.
