Many people develop dry itchy skin as they age. There are a number of home remedies for dry skin, as well as commercial products you can buy.
Homemade remedies for dry skin are easy to make with ingredients found in most kitchens. Many of them are very effective. They are also becoming more popular these days.
One of the advantages of home remedies for dry skin is that you know what ingredients go into them and that the ingredients are all natural. Natural skin care remedies are recommended because they do not irritate or further damage the skin.
If you are not inclined to make your own dry skin remedies, there are some good commercial products you can buy. Look for those that contain antioxidants that will nourish the skin. Look for products made from natural ingredients so they won’t irritate your skin. (See our recommended products section below).
The most important thing you can do to prevent dry itchy skin is to drink enough water. Dehydration can lead to dry skin. Many people are slightly dehydrated all of the time because they don’t drink the recommended amount of water. It is recommended that you drink at least eight glasses of water per day, and this will keep your skin well hydrated and help to prevent dry skin.
Dry skin often gets worse in the winter when the air is drier. You can use a humidifier in your home so the air is not as dry.
If you have dry skin, use some sort of treatment to prevent the condition from worsening. You can use a commercial product such as a moisturizer or lotion meant for dry and itchy skin, or you can try home remedies for dry skin. Don’t scratch the dry skin because you may break the skin and it can become infected.
Here are some home remedies for dry skin. You may already have these ingredients in your kitchen, or you can find them at any grocery store.
Massage the skin with olive oil, almond oil, or grapeseed oil. This will relieve dry itchy skin.
Mash a banana and apply the mash to the face. Leave it on for 15 minutes, then rinse off with cool water.
Mash half an avocado and mix it with a few drops of lime juice. Apply to the face and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse with cool water.
Oatmeal and Honey
Mix cooked oatmeal with honey. Apply to the face and let it dry, then rinse with cool water.
Egg and Orange Juice Remedy
Combine one egg yolk, one teaspoon of orange juice, one teaspoon of olive oil, a few drops of rosewater and a few drops of lime juice in a bowl. Mix well, then apply to the face. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse with cool water.
Add 8 – 10 drops of lavender essential oil to your bath water.
Add oatmeal to your bath water. You can also add cornstarch.
Use your preferred remedy on a regular basis. Facial masks can be used several times a week. Baths can also be used several times a week. If you suffer from dry skin, it is recommended that you not bathe every day unless absolutely necessary. Too much water on the skin can dry it out.
If your dry itchy skin doesn’t respond to home remedies for dry skin or to over-the-counter commercial products, see a dermatologist for a diagnosis and treatment.
