How Do You Get Scabies

How do you get scabies? Scabies transmission occurs when you touch someone that has scabies. Scabies transmission can also occur if you share towels, blankets or clothing with someone that has the condition. When asking how do you get scabies, it’s important to understand that anyone can get scabies. Even if you bathe regularly and keep your house very clean, you can still get scabies from someone that has the condition.

Scabies is a condition in which tiny mites burrow under your skin. They feed on your blood and multiply there beneath your skin. Most people have an allergic reaction to the mites, their eggs and their feces. The allergic reaction causes a distinctive rash that consists of tiny bumps connected by thin red lines showing where the mites have traveled beneath your skin. The rash is usually very itchy.

In addition to wondering how do you get scabies, people want to know how to prevent scabies. Unfortunately, scabies is a very contagious condition and scabies transmission can occur from something as simple as shaking hands with someone that has the condition. More physical contact than a handshake increases your odds of contracting the condition, however.

Try to avoid close contact with anyone that has scabies, but if you have been close to someone with scabies, you should get treatment for the condition as soon as possible. You need to get treatment even if you don’t have any symptoms of scabies, because sometimes it takes a little while for symptoms to appear even if you have the condition. Doctors usually recommend that you get treatment if anyone in your household gets scabies, even if you don’t think you’ve had any close physical contact. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

In addition to physical contact, you can also get scabies from sharing clothing, towels or other personal items with someone that has scabies. To prevent scabies transmission in this manner, wash all clothing and linens in hot water and do not share them with anyone until you’re sure that they do not have scabies any longer.

In addition to wondering how do you get scabies, people naturally want to know how you get rid of it. Most of the time, doctors prescribe a prescription skin cream called Permethrin to get rid of scabies. There are other skin creams they can prescribe, but Permethrin is prescribed most often because it has fewer serious side effects than other skin creams. Sometimes Permethrin doesn’t work, though, or there is some reason a person shouldn’t use that medication.

If skin creams don’t work or if there is some reason people shouldn’t use them, doctors can prescribe an oral medication called Ivermectin. It’s usually used as a last resort, though, because it has so many side effects, some of them pretty severe (like seizures).

Some people look for a natural treatment for scabies in order to avoid the side effects of prescription medications.

Talk to a doctor if you have more questions about how do you get scabies or scabies transmission. See a doctor if your case of scabies doesn’t go away after undergoing your chosen treatment.
