Treatment For Scabies

It’s important to get treatment for scabies as soon as you realize you have the condition. Your doctor can prescribe some scabies medicine for you or you can purchase a natural treatment without a prescription if you prefer. It’s important to get treatment for scabies right away because the condition will not go away without treatment. Instead, it will just get worse. In addition, scabies mites are highly contagious and you don’t want to spread the condition to others.

You can prevent the spread of scabies to others by avoiding close contact with anyone until you are sure you no longer have the condition. In addition to avoiding close contact with people while you have scabies, you should not share clothing, towels or bedding with anyone else. Wash all those things in hot water to make sure they aren’t harboring any scabies mites.

Everyone that lives in your house should use scabies medicine or some other treatment for scabies to make sure they don’t break out with the condition, even if they have no symptoms right now.

Doctors frequently recommend prescription scabies medicine as a treatment for scabies. They usually prescribe a skin cream like Permethrin, which contains pesticide that is absorbed through the skin to kill the scabies mites. Most of the time, but not always, prescription skin creams cure scabies but it may take more than one application and they can cause unwanted side effects like skin irritation and increased itching. Prescription skin creams may not be safe for very small children, pregnant women and breastfeeding women. Some prescription medications interact in a harmful way with prescription skin creams for scabies, so if your doctor prescribes a skin cream for you, make sure you tell him or her about any other medication you are taking.

If prescription skin creams don’t cure scabies, doctors prescribe oral scabies medicine like Ivermectin. Doctors might recommend oral scabies medicine before trying a prescription skin cream if someone has a particularly severe case of scabies or is someone is unlikely to be able to comply with the skin cream regimen (like someone that suffers from dementia or mental retardation, for example). Ivermectin usually cures scabies but doctors generally prefer to try a medicated skin cream first because Ivermectin has a long list of potential side effects, including nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting and seizures. Children under the age of five years, pregnant women and breastfeeding women are advised not to use Ivermectin.

Some people hesitate to use prescription medications for scabies due to the risk of side effects, but if you have scabies, it is imperative to get some form of treatment because the mites will not just go away on their own. People that prefer not to use prescription medications for scabies can use a natural treatment instead. Natural scabies treatments are usually made from herbs or plant extracts, so they generally don’t have any disturbing side effects to worry about. Some natural scabies treatments work better than others, though.

See a doctor if your scabies doesn’t get better when using a natural scabies treatment or if you want to talk about what type of treatment would be best for you.
