What Does Scabies Look Like

People may ask what does scabies look like if they develop an itchy skin rash. So what do scabies look like? Usually like small bumps or blisters on the skin along with fine red lines that indicate where the scabies mites are tunneling beneath the skin. You usually find scabies in the folds of the skin, like the inside of your elbows or the backs of your knees, under your breasts, between your fingers and in your genital area.

Parents may wonder what does scabies look like in young children. It looks a lot like scabies in adults but young children may also develop a scabies rash on their faces or scalps, while adults rarely do.

When wondering what do scabies look like, it’s important to understand that bumps and red lines on the skin are not the only symptoms of scabies. Scabies usually causes intense itching as well. The itching usually gets worse at night.

Sometimes when people ask what do scabies look like, though, they aren’t asking what the rash looks like. They want to know what the mites that cause the rash look like. They are very small, about the size of a pinhead. They are nearly transparent and have eight legs. You usually won’t see the mites, however, you’ll just see the rash they cause.

Now that we’ve answered the question of what does scabies look like, you’re probably wondering what you can do to prevent scabies. Avoid close personal contact with people that have scabies and don’t share items like blankets, towels or clothing with them. Scabies is really contagious, though, so if anyone in your house gets scabies, everyone that lives there should get treatment.

In addition to asking what do scabies look like, people want to know how to treat the condition. It’s important to get treatment as soon as possible since scabies is so contagious and the itching it causes can be so severe.

Doctors usually prescribe prescription skin creams to treat scabies, such as Permethrin. Permethrin contains pesticide that gets absorbed through the skin to kill scabies mites. When asking what does scabies look like, you should know that Permethrin does not immediately cure the scabies rash. In fact, it can cause redness and skin irritation as well as increased itching.

Sometimes doctors prescribe an oral medication for scabies instead, like Ivermectin. In most cases, though, doctors prefer to prescribe skin creams because Ivermectin can cause so many side effects, including diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, fainting, dizziness and seizures.

Some people prefer to use a natural treatment for scabies in order to avoid the risk of side effects. Natural treatments don’t require a prescription, either, and may be more affordable than prescription medications.

When choosing your treatment for scabies, make sure you understand what do scabies look like. If you have a rash that is caused by something other than scabies, scabies treatments probably won’t help.

See your doctor if you have more questions about what does scabies look like. If your scabies rash is crusty-looking, you may have an uncommon form of scabies sometimes called Norwegian scabies. It’s harder to treat, so you may need to see a doctor for help.
